Ireland yesterday made global history, after backing same-sex marriage in a popular vote.

Just over 62% supported changing the Constitution, with more than 1.2 million people turning out in support of marriage equality.

Almost as soon as counting had started, it was clear that it was going to be a Yes vote. But as results slowly trickled in from around the country, it was a long afternoon of anticipation and excitement while everybody waited for the official declaration in the early evening.

Newstalk was covering the referendum results throughout the day. We heard from prominent Yes campaigners as they came to terms with the news. Ivan Yates was on hand to confidently declare a Yes victory early in the day, while Chris Donoghue was in Dublin Castle for the official declaration. It was a day of high emotions and more than a few tears, and one presenter even popped the question live on air...
