Leaving certificate students could earn points for failing as part of a new plan put forward by universities. They could still get some points, even if they fail a higher-level paper.

It means students who get between 30 and 39% at higher-level could still earn points to get into college.

The plans also include an idea to give bonus points for subjects directly relevant to college courses, as well as widening the gap between the number of points awarded for honours and pass grades.

The idea is to discourage students from taking subjects considered to be easier.

Guidance counsellor Brian Mooney thinks it will put even more of a squeeze on college places.

Results for this year's Leaving Cert are out on Wednesday.
