With just 1 day to go until the Children’s Referendum campaigners for both the Yes and No sides will be out canvassing today in a last ditch attempt to sway voters.

Yesterday the Supreme Court ruled that the information campaign run by the government in booklets and on its website was one-sided in favour of the Yes campaign.

The website has since been taken off-line.

A group of Independent TDs now wants the ballot tomorrow to be postponed.

But the government is insisting that the ruling will not affect the referendum and does not change the substance of putting children’s rights in the constitution.

A broadcast moratorium on material relating to the referendum takes effect at 2pm this afternoon.

Praise for media

However the Chairperson of the Referendum Commission Ms. Justice Mary Finlay-Geoghegan has praised the “overwhelmingly positive and civic-minded response” of broadcasters to her request for an increase in the amount of time they give to broadcasts explaining the referendum.

The Chairperson wrote to the more than 60 radio and television stations here asking for the increase in airtime for the explanatory broadcasts.

The Commission says this was because the amount of airtime and space being given to discussion of the referendum proposal in all broadcast and print media appeared to be considerably less on this occasion than in relation to many previous referendums.
