The Taoiseach Enda Kenny is set to deliver an historic apology to the women of the Magdalene laundries in the Dáil this evening.

It will come during a debate on the McAleese report which outlined clear evidence of State involvement in the laundries.

A financial package is also set to be approved by the Cabinet.

Both the the Taoiseach and Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore have met with a number of the survivors since the report was published 2 weeks ago.

It is believed the government is anxious to avoid creating a compensation scheme which would involve hefty legal bills for the State.

The Taoiseach earlier today refused to say if he will apologise to the survivors.

Opposition parties have rounded on the Taoiseach in the Dáil after groups representing the women expressed initial outrage that he had not given them the apology they expected.

Maureen Sullivan was sent to the Magdalene Laundry in New Ross, Co. Wexford in 1964.

She hopes this apology will help survivors draw a line under their past.
