The Taoiseach says getting a deal on Irish bank debt right is more important than making it happen quickly.

Enda Kenny has met the French President Francois Hollande in Paris in the wake of an acknowledgement from Germany that the Irish case is ‘special’.

He says the European Central Bank (ECB) and other supervising authorities are going to have a range of work to do by next year.

Speaking to reporters at the Élysée Palace Mr. Kenny says getting the right deal is of vital importance.

The French President says it is still “too early to say” how much of the €64 billion pumped into Irish banks could form part of a deal on debt.

He has also declared that so-called legacy debt or past debt from before the establishment of the European Stability Mechansim (ESM) can be taken into account.

While President Hollande said it is still not possible to say what Ireland can hope for he acknowlegded the special or specific case that Ireland has and was also adamant that legacy or past debt is on the table.
