The jury in a conspiracy to defraud trial has been sent home for the evening without reaching a verdict in the case of former Irish Life & Permanent CEO Denis Casey.

Mr Casey denies engaging in a dishonest scheme to mislead the public about Anglo Irish Bank’s health in 2008.

The prosecution claims €7.2 billion was passed between the banks between March and September 2008, with the aim of creating a false and misleading impression that Anglo had more in deposits than it really had.

Last week, former Anglo bankers Willie McAteer and John Bowe were convicted of the same charge, while Peter Fitzpatrick, formerly of IL&P, was acquitted.

The jurors have now been deliberating for just over 58 hours, and will return to the jury room in the morning.
