A judge has agreed to remove a 61-year-old child abuser from the sex offenders register.

The Dublin man has been on it since he was found guilty of sexually assaulting his daughter 15 years ago.

The man, who can’t be identified to protect his daughter’s identity, first abused her in the 1970s when she was just seven, and he was also found guilty of sexually assaulting her as an adult when she fell asleep in his house one night.

He was jailed for two years following a trial in 2000, and has been monitored by Gardai since his release. Last year, officers made six unannounced visits to his home and they’ve called over four times already this year.

A sex offender can apply to be removed from the register ten years after leaving prison, and if they can convince a judge that the interests of the common good would no longer be served by remaining on it.

In this case, a recent report put the man at a low risk of re-offending and Judge Martin Nolan agreed to approve his application.

The order won’t take effect for four weeks, during which time the DPP will be able to decide on whether to appeal.
