US president Joe Biden has confirmed he will run for re-election in a statement to the press.

He announced his intentions at Knock Airport as he prepared to board Air Force One on the final day of his visit to Ireland.

When asked about his 2024 bid, President Biden said, "I told you my plan is to run again.”

"I've already made that calculus. We'll announce it relatively soon. But the trip here just reinforced my sense of optimism about what can be done,” he said.

The 80-year-old Democrat may go up against Republican Donald Trump in a re-run of the 2020 election.

Mr Trump was recently charged with business fraud over hush-money payments to ex-porn actress Stormy Daniels – but he is currently leading in Republican presidential polls.

Mr Biden’s departure from Knock Airport marked the end of his visit to Ireland; during his final speech in Ballina, he said Ireland the the US are united by “common ties”.

"I've never been more optimistic of what we can achieve if we stick together and stick to our values," he said.

"United by history, heritage and hope - and maybe most of all by courage - nothing is beyond our reach".

Mr Biden also wished for “Mayo for Sam” at the end of his speech.

During his four-day vist, Biden went to Belfast, Louth, Dublin and Mayo.
