The Labour Party has launched its social media campaign for a Yes vote in the Marriage Referendum.

The initiative uses the hashtag '#Makeithappen' to encourages people to speak to their family and friends about voting in favour of the constitutional amendment.

The Tánaiste Joan Burton and the Minister for Communications Alex White, will also meet with people over the age 70 in Dublin this afternoon, to discuss the importance older people voting Yes in the referendum.

"By doing something relatively straightforward like bringing an older relative, friend, or neighbour to coffee to talk about the upcoming referendum, supporters of a Yes vote could potentially help sway someone from No or doubtful, to Yes," said Burton.

Joan Burton has also stated that the Marriage Referendum only applies to civil marriage and it will not interfere with religious ceremonies.

The Catholic Church has said it would withdraw their function of registering civil marriages, if the referendum on same-sex marriage passes later this month.

But the Tánaiste says the amendment to the Constitution is not looking to change the meaning of marriage, but rather to extend it to gay and lesbian couples.

She says it is the Church's decision how they choose to manage their own Catholic marriage ceremonies:

Meanwhile, Alex White, Labour Director of Elections for the Marriage Referendum, spoke to Newstalk Lunchtime about their campaign. You can listen back below:
