The gaming world is gearing up for its biggest week in years, with the release of latest Xbox and Playstation consoles.

Microsoft is today releasing two new Xbox consoles – the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S – with Sony preparing to release the PS5 later in the week.

Newstalk Tech Correspondent Jess Kelly has got her hands on both consoles and will be previewing them for listeners throughout the week.

On Newstalk Breakfast this morning, she said the Xbox “really is worth the hype.”

“This is an exciting day; this is an exciting week because not only do we get the new Xbox devices, we also get the PS5 later in the week as well so I know there are a lot of excited gamers right across the country,” she said.

“It is three years since we got the Xbox One X which was kind of a 0.5 version, an in between step, in terms of consoles.

“Today, gamers will hopefully be able to get their hands on the Xbox series X and then the smaller version which is the Xbox Series S.

“The key difference between them is that one has a disk drive to put in the physical games and the other one doesn’t which brings down the cost significantly to €299.”

Jess said the usefulness of the disk completely depends on how good your internet connection is.

“It does depend on whether you can download and stream games versus having to put in the physical disk,” she said.

“Some people still like having the physical disk. It is like, do you still buy vinyl or do you just listen to Spotify? That kind of thing.

“Most gamers I think would be happy to just go with the smaller console; however, there are some other smaller differences like the storage, the processor and obviously the drive size as well.”

Jess said the Series X version is “great” but, for most gamers, the Series X “absolutely does the job.”

“They key thing is you can’t use it as a Blue Ray player and, as I said, the storage is a big thing because if you download say five games on to the Series S, you may then have to delete one to put another game on it because you do have limited storage,” she said.
