A veteran republican is to be prosecuted over his involvement in the abduction and murder of Jean McConville.

Ivor Bell was arrested and charged in connection with the disappearance of the mother of ten last year.

The Public Prosecution Service says it is proceeding with the case, despite evidence being from the controversial Boston College tapes.

The oral history project involved interviews with former paramilitaries on the understanding they would not be shared until after their deaths.

A lawyer for the Public Prosecution Service said "A decision has now been taken to prosecute this defendant".

Mr Bell (78) from Ramoan Gardens in west Belfast is to be charged with aiding and abetting the widow's murder.

Mrs McConville was dragged from her home in the Divis flats by an IRA gang of up to 12 people after being accused of passing information to the British Army in Belfast - an allegation discredited by the Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman.

Her disappearance in 1972 was one of the most notorious incidents of the Troubles, with her body only recovered from a Co Louth beach in 2003.

No-one has been convicted of her murder.
