The mother of a Cork man in a coma in Australia says she wants her son back in her arms.

Jason Cierans was knocked unconscious during an assault outside a bar in the Bondi Junction area of Sydney last weekend.

30-year-old Adrian Gabriel-Martinez has been charged with "recklessly causing grievous bodily harm" in relation to the incident.

Mr Martinez appeared in court today and was granted bail, with the matter set to return to court in October.

A 27-year-old man has also been charged with affray following the incident.

Jason's mother, Stephanie, has told the Sydney Morning Herald that she could not be prouder of her son - and that her world has been turned upside down.

"I need him to get well and come home to me. I want him back in my arms. I want to kiss and hug him", she says.

The 29-year-old remains in an induced coma in a critical but stable condition.

Mr Cierans is believed to have suffered a serious head injury, causing swelling of the brain.

The two men and the victim are not believed to be known to each other, police have said.
