One of the big ticket items in yesterday’s budget was 2.2 billion euro in social housing investment over the next three years. 800 million euro will be spent on 2,500 houses next year, with 7,500 social houses due over the next three years.
3,000 units will be leased, 2,000 under the Rental Accommodation scheme, almost 950 built or acquired by local authorities, 1,000 vacant units brought back in to use, and 550 for people with specific needs.
Environment Minister Alan Kelly spoke to Newstalk Lunchtime today about social housing and claims from opposition parties that any gains for families in the budget will be cancelled out by Irish Water charges.
