A jigsaw maker has made it his mission to build the world's largest jigsaw – some 50 years after his grandfather broke the record.

Just Jigsaws, a children's toy company, have set themselves the task of building the world's largest Jigsaw – with a staggering 120,000 pieces.

Speaking to Moncrieff this week, CEO John Trownsdale said the company marked their 50th anniversary this year.

"My granddad started the company in '73, but in '71, he had the original world record as a puzzle of 32,000 pieces," she said.

"My granddad always wanted to redo the world record and it just felt like the right time to do it."

The current world record is a 101,000-piece puzzle, Mr Trownsdale told the show.

"We want to make sure it's not being broken for a long, long, long, long time," he said.

Mr Townsdale said in order to make the pieces, boards are cut 16x12, which are then split into 63.

"There will be 2,000 sections like that," he said.

"When we've cut one, we have to get the next board and overlay it. So, we've got to hand draw on where the cut pieces will be.

"You have to follow that line to make sure that that board fits the next board and that's the real skill.

"If that bit is wrong, it won't fit together."

'By hand'

Mr Townsdale said Just Jigsaws are the only manufacturer in the UK that make jigsaws by hand.

"With children you need a puzzle to be self-correcting," he said. "When it's stamped out or laser cut, it's not self-correcting."

"When it's hand cut, it really gives them that feeling of knowing it's right. So when they've done it, it can't go in any other way – making it unique.

"The trade is unique because it takes such takes skill, to be honest with you, it's a real skill craft."

Mr Towsndale said the record-breaking puzzle will have an array of images.

"I'm trying to make sure it's more of a community project than just the one from us," he said.

"Whatever we get leftover, we're making puzzles and donating to one of our local children's hospitals."

Ms Townsdale said it is important to make sure no pieces are lost – as each is unique.

"When we did it in '71,  one of the workers with my granddad lost one piece," he said.

"They had to get one piece and try and file it down and fit in because that particular one was hand-painted.

"It was the biggest nightmare ever."
