Israel's security cabinet has approved the detention without trial of Jewish terror suspects.

Previously such measures were only legal when applied to Palestinians.

Recently re-elected Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu affirms his government has "zero tolerance" for Jewish extremists, following separate attacks that left two people dead.

The government has been pressured by thousands who have protested against this increasingly radical fringe of Israeli society.

A 16-year-old died of her injuries after an attack by Yishai Shlissel, an ultra-Orthodox Jew, at a gay pride event last week in Jerusalem. He had been released from prison just three weeks beforehand, having served a ten-year sentence for stabbing a number of people at the same event in 2005.

On Friday, extremists set fire to a Palestinian home in the West bank, killing a toddler. Grafitti left on the building suggested it was a 'price tag' attack - a retaliation for action taken against Israeli settlements.
