The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the family of an Irish man who has died in San Francisco.

He has been named as Dean MacCearain, from Co Monaghan - who features in the recently released Queen of Ireland documentary about Panti Bliss.

Panti has taken to social media to pay tribute to the 23-year-old - describing him as a smart, quick-witted, funny young man.

It is understood Dean was on holiday with his family when he passed away.

The cause of his death is not yet known.

In a Facebook post, Panti wrote, "we didn't know Dean very well, but we didn't need to know him very well to know he was a smart, quick-witted, funny, charming young man. The thoughts and deepest condolences of everyone involved in the film are with his family, his many friends, and his former classmates".
