An Irish citizen has been found safe and unharmed after the attacks in Nice on Thursday, it has been confirmed.

There had been concerns over the safety of a man, believed to be from Galway, after a 19-ton lorry was driven into a crowd on the seafront during Bastille Day celebrations on Thursday evening, killing at least 84 people.

In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said that they were "continuing to work to establish contact with a small number of individuals with whom contact has not yet been made, but the Department has no reason to believe that any of these have been caught up in the incident."

Noting that there were particular concerns over one individual, the statement added that "following intensive follow-up, the Department is now satisfied that there is no longer cause for concern in that case."

The statement also added that there will be further efforts made by the Department to contact "a small number of individuals in order to assure ourselves that they are safe and well."
