There are signs childhood obesity rates are beginning to fall.
Researchers at University College Cork (UCC) and University College Dublin (UCD) reviewed all 14 studies carried out into childhood overweight and obesity rates in Ireland from 2002 to 2012.
They found that during those 10 years, childhood overweight rates had remained stable - but national obesity rates dropped from a constant 7% to 4% after 2008.
However, one in four primary school children are still overweight or obese.
Eimear Keane from UCC is lead author of the study.
She says if the food industry was regulated, childhood obesity rates could drop even further.
