A young Irish boy who was found unconscious in a swimming pool in Spain has died.

The three-year-old passed away in hospital on Tuesday, after being discovered at an apartment complex near Alicante on Monday.

It is understood he was on holiday with his family.

He was given CPR at the scene before being brought to a local hospital.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
