A Dáil committee is inviting submissions on a reduction in the period of bankruptcy from three years to one year.

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality expects to receive a broad range of submissions - both in favour and against.

The committee conducted pre-legislative scrutiny on the issue of insolvency and produced a report containing 16 recommendations.

One of these was that families should be facilitated as far as possible to remain in the family home.

The closing date for receipt of submissions is Friday June 19th at 3pm.

Committee chairman David Stanton TD said: "We continue to examine the legislative regime closely, having hosted a detailed discussion with the Insolvency Service of Ireland last Wednesday. To further inform our work, the committee is now inviting interested individuals and groups to have their say on the current three year bankruptcy term, and whether it should be reduced to one year".

The committee may decide to invite one or more individuals or groups to public hearings to discuss particular submissions in detail.
