Shauna Moreland’s mother Caroline was murdered by the IRA in 1994 for being an alleged informer, only weeks before the announcement of an IRA ceasefire.

As reported in the Sunday Independent this weekend, Shauna still has questions left unanswered - 21 years after her mother's murder.

Shauna spoke to Newstalk Lunchtime today. She started by telling Jonathan she was only 10 when her mother went missing.

"I said goodbye to her, and gave her a hug and a kiss. There was nothing unusual about it, you didn't think you weren't going to see her again," she said.

"She was missing for 15 days but in my memory [it feels] like it was three days. I guess that's my way of coping with it," she said.

When she found out her mother was dead, she says she didn't rationalise it well. "All I did was scream," she told Jonathan.

"There's been nobody ever charged with her death. As far as we can tell there's been no proper investigation. Even gaining access to inquest reports and coroners' reports is a nightmare".

Shauna hopes that by speaking out that doors will start opening instead of them "closing in my face. For me to continue on on the journey and get answers and justice for my mummy, I've had to bring it into the spotlight a bit".

Shauna believes her mother was sacrificed for a higher up informant, and the IRA used her "to send a message". However, she does not believe her mother was an informant.

Although she knows there might be no criminal convictions now, she says "for me this journey did start on closure, being able to lie my mummy to rest... and say I fought for her as hard as I could, to get the answers that were there".
