International Mother Language Day is held annually on the 21st of February worldwide to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.

There are over 3,500 Deaf people living in Ireland whose native language is Irish Sign Language. To date ISL is not a recognised language in our country.

Joining Dil for the second hour of the show this week to talk about the Irish Deaf Society’s ISL Recognition Campaign and the forthcoming ISL awareness week coming up in September will be:

-Dr John Bosco Conama the Chair of the Irish Deaf Society’s ISL Recognition Campaign.

-Professor Lorraine Leeson- the Director of the CDS, Centre for Deaf Studies, in Trinity College Dublin.

And to talk about how this impacts on day to day life:

-Claudia Gray who is a hearing mother who learnt ISL to communicate with her Deaf child.

-Teresa Lynch who is a lecturer in CDS, Centre for Deaf Studies, she is a member of the IDS, a Deaf mother, a Deaf woman.

-Daniel Crean who is the son of Teresa Lynch, he is hearing and training in the CDS to become an interpreter.
