The inquest into the death of Dhara Kivlehan has heard that she was in actue renal failure in Sligo General Hospital, up to six days before her death in September 2010.

The 29-year-old - originally from India but living in Dromahair - died in Belfast's Victoria Hospital in 2010 after giving birth eight days earlier in the Sligo hospital.

Midwife with Sligo General Hospital Mairead Beirne told the inquest she cared for Dhara Kivlehan in the maternity ward, 24 hours after she had an emergency Cesarean section.

She has confirmed that five sets of blood test results - available by the time she began her shift that day - indicated that it was likely Ms Kivlehan was in acute renal failure.

She has also told the Coroner that this had been recorded in the notes that day by the Obstetrics Registrar Dr Hind Al Hussein - who is not appearing at this inquest.

When the inquest opened on Monday, it heard that when Dhara's husband Michael raised concern that his wife may be suffering from jaundice, he was told it was difficult to tell because Dhara was Indian.

The inquest is taking place at Carrick-on-Shannon Coroner's Court.

It is expected to also sit on Thursday, Friday and next Monday before coroner Eamon MacGowan.
