Other recent hits that are regularly abandoned by readers include Eat Pray Love ("heroine seems whiny and self-obsessed") and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ("slow beginning").
It's not just modern literature that frustrates readers. The infographic, compiled by literary social network Goodreads, also reveals the top-five classics that prove insurmountable to some. Joseph Heller's World War II black comedy Catch-22 tops the 'abandoned' classics list, followed by Lord of the Rings, Ulysees and Moby Dick. Ayn Rand's infamously divisive ideological epic Atlas Shrugged rounds out the 'top' five.
35% of readers say they'll usually give a book somewhere between 50 and 100 pages before they call it a day, with 15.8% only giving a work 50 pages or less to hook them. However, 38.1% of readers say they'll finish a book, no matter what - even if it means returning to it years later.
