A three-year-old girl is recovering in hospital after she was rescued from the River Lee in Cork earlier today.
The toddler was walking along the river with an adult when she fell 20 feet down an embankment and into the water at St Patrick's Quay at around lunchtime today.
A woman in her 30s who was passing by is understood to have jumped into the water and rescued the young girl. The rescuer has since been named locally as Maria Daly from Cobh.
Both were transferred to Cork University Hospital and neither are thought to have suffered any injuries.
The Cork fire service has praised the bravery and determination of the woman who rescued the girl.
A spokesman for the Cork City Fire Brigade, told TheJournal.ie that the child managed to get under the fence and to the water’s edge, and fell in.
"It was a pure accident. The lady saw that was after happening. She took it upon herself to jump approximately five metres into the water. She got hold of the child and kept it afloat. She kept the child alive."
