The 3,500 Irish soldiers killed in the Battle of the Somme have been remembered at a ceremony in Dublin today.

A minute's silence was held and the President lay a wreath in memory of those killed in the most deadly battle of World War One.

The event took place at the Irish National War Memorial Gardens in Islandbridge in Dublin 8.

It is one of series of events being held across Europe to mark 100 years since the fighting.
