Newstalk Breakfast is coming to us live from the G Hotel in Galway this morning as we join in the Galway races festivities and Ivan was feeling a little slow off the mark this morning in his unfamiliar surroundings, with Chris telling him “I’m live, you’re half alive...”.
Today’s front pages were a diverse lot, with almost every major paper – broadsheet or tabloid – going with a different lead story.
The Irish Times lead with “State under pressure to put rail services out to tender” – a move the government is reported to be opposed to. The Irish Independent goes with “Bank still has homes it stole in mortgage rip off” – continuing coverage of yesterday’s story of serious errors from Permanent TSB costing people their homes, and the Irish Examiner covers the riot at Cloverhill prison, with the headline “Inmates taken hostage during jail riot”.
The tabloids are also covering a broad range –from a father arrested in connection with the death of his infant son, to a ‘jail exclusive’ update on Graham Dwyer’s life behind bars.
Inside the papers Chris spotted a story about a 17 –year-old girl who has successfully sued Aldi for defamation after a store manager told a security guard to “keep an eye on the tinkers in aisle three”.
Ivan meanwhile was taken by the story of Pauline Mclynn, of Father Ted fame, taking part in a Mrs Doyle inspired road safety campaign in Mayo.
The pair then got to debating the scourge of text walkers – those of us plaguing the footpaths with slow, absent minded strolls aw we gawk absentmindedly into our phones.
