Ikea is to start buying back customers' old and unwanted furniture.

The retailer says it will give customers trading in their old furniture a voucher to spend in store, with the amount depending on the condition of the item.

Furniture that's as new with no scratches will be worth 50% of the original price - decreasing to 40% for 'very good' condition items with minor scratches and 30% for well-used furniture with several scratches.

The traded-in items will then be available to buy second-hand in Ikea stores.

Ireland is one of the 27 countries where the new offer will be in place, with the scheme to launch on November 24th.

Ikea's Peter Jelkeby said: “Sustainability is the defining issue of our time and Ikea is committed to being part of the solution to promote sustainable consumption and combat climate change."

The retailer said it's launching the initiative ahead of Black Friday in a bid to encourage customers to 'take a stand against excessive consumption'.

While COVID-19 restrictions remain in place, the company also says any furniture traded in will be quarantined and sanitised before being placed on the shop floor.
