Fr Iggy O’Donovan is an outspoken Augustinian priest.

He grew up in the Glen of Aherlow in south Tipperary, with his late parents, Anthony and Margaret, his six brothers, and his three sisters – including his twin sister, Phil.

He attended the local primary school before moving to an Augustinian boarding school in Dungarvan, Co Waterford.

The missionaries he met there sparked an interest in the priesthood, and he joined the Augustinians in 1976 before his ordination in 1983.

He studied History and Politics in UCD – the first in his family to go to college. He developed what he says are his ’radical roots’ while attending the university and he says he still has them today.

He’s often been publicly critical of the Catholic Church and has endured attempts to reign him in. Last year he was moved from his parish in Drogheda, because he allowed godparents to pour water on a baby’s head during a baptism.

He’s currently with the Augustinian community in Limerick.

And these are Iggy O’Donovan’s Musical Heirlooms….

Iggy's song choices are:

  • Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Waters
  • Patti Page - How Much is That Doggie in the Window
