President Higgins has completed a week long state visit to Ethiopia where he attended a number of high level meetings with the president and prime minister. He also spoke at the UN, and held a meeting with the president of the African Union and representatives from key African states.

In his meetings he signed off on three bi-lateral agreements on taxation, development and transport, and visited a number of Irish Aid projects in Tigray – the centre ground for Ethiopia’s two famines and brutal civil war.

Mr Higgins addressed the need for greater support for countries battling the Ebola crisis, and the strengthening of peace talks in South Sudan.

He also addressed the issue of LGBT rights, as 38 African countries, Ethiopia included, have laws banning homosexuality.
