Hozier’s global stock continues to rise with the news that his debut album has landed at number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States. It is the second highest entry for a new artist on the chart in 2014.
The self-titled debut sold 58,000 copies in its first week, boosted by Hozier’s appearance on Saturday Night Live this past weekend, where he performed two songs.
The Hozier hype began in the US in February of this year, as hit single Take me to Church gained regular play on US radio and began to attract attention to the Bray singer-songwriter.
He is currently touring the United States and Canada, playing a series of gigs across the continent before returning to Europe in November.
The number one spot in the US this week went to Country star Jason Aldean, whose album Old Boots, New Dirt, sold 278,000 copies in its first week and gave Aldean his second number 1 album. Aldean’s album enjoyed the third biggest opening week of any album, selling less than Coldplay’s Ghost Stories and Eric Church’s The Outsiders.
