Production has been suspended on the latest series of House of Cards following the allegation that its star Kevin Spacey made a sexual advance to a teenager 30 years ago.

In an interview with Buzzfeed, actor Anthony Rapp accused the 58-year-old actor of picking him up at a party in 1986, placing him on his bed and climbing on top of him.

Rapp - who is now 46 - would have been 14 at the time of the alleged incident and Spacey 26.

Spacey has said he was 'beyond horrified' to hear Rapp's story and said he did not remember the encounter - but offered an apology 'if I did behave then as he describes'.

However, the Hollywood star has also drawn criticism for using his apology to reveal he is "now living as a gay man" - with LGBT groups & activists raising concerns that he came out at the same time as responding to the allegations.

In the wake of the allegation, it was announced that Spacey would no longer receive an Emmy from the International TV Academy.

Netflix and production company Media Rights Capital (MRC) yesterday announced that their flagship show House of Cards would end after its upcoming sixth season - which is currently filming in Baltimore - saying they were 'deeply troubled' by the report about Spacey.

However, work on the new season has now been halted indefinitely.

In a statement published by Deadline and other US media outlets, the two companies said: "MRC and Netflix have decided to suspend production on House of Cards season six, until further notice, to give us time to review the current situation and to address any concerns of our cast and crew."

Executives from the companies are said to be meeting with the cast & crew today.

The creator of House of Cards Beau Willimon yesterday responded to the allegation, saying: "During the time I worked with Kevin Spacey on House of Cards I neither witnessed nor was aware of any inappropriate behaviour on set or off.

"That said, I take reports of such behaviour seriously, and this is no exception."
