It costs about €50 to carry out a simple test for radon gas in your home - but it could help prevent you from getting lung cancer.

That is the message from the Environmental Protection Agency on European Radon Day, which is aimed at highlighting the dangers of this radioactive gas.

12 Irish counties in the west and south-east are at high risk of radon, with the highest levels being recorded in Sligo.

This week, the EPA's Office of Radiological Protection is encouraging homeowners in County Clare - where levels of radon gas are also high - to apply for a home-testing kit.
