A historic grenade discovered in Aughrim, Co. Galway this afternoon has been made safe.
The Army Bomb Disposal Team was called to the scene by the Gardai after a badly corroded Mills 36 type hand grenade was found on grassland by a member of the public close to a walking path.
The scene was declared safe at 5.30 pm.

The Mills type grenade is early 20th Century in origin and was used during the War of Independence, the Civil War and World Wars 1 and 2.
The Defence forces are advising members of the public find such a device they should keep a safe distance and inform the Gardaí.
