A mother who drowned saving her son from the water on a beach in east Cork last weekend is to be laid to rest in her native Poland.

34-year-old Joanna Wisniowska died after entering the water at Ballycroneen Beach in Cloyne on Sunday afternoon.

She had gone to the aid of her 10-year-old son - and managed to help get him to the safety of some offshore rocks.

Tragically, she was then swept away.

A major search and rescue operation was launched within minutes of the alarm being raised and Ms Wisniowska was airlifted by the Coast Guard Helicopter to Cork University Hospital, where she later died.

A funeral service is to be held for the mother-of-two at St. Colman's Church Cloyne at 7pm tomorrow night.

She will then be laid to rest in her hometown of Strzyzow in Poland.

Separately a fundraiser set up in aid of Joanna’s family has now reached nearly €30,000.

It notes that there is nothing more precious than a mother’s love – and labels Joanna a ‘superwoman’ for saving her son in his time of need.
