Bob Geldof has defended the new "Do They Know It's Christmas" single by claiming his detractors are "talking bollocks".

The humanitarian made the comments - twice - during a live interview on Sky News.

Given the success of Band Aid in the 80s, Mr Geldof decided it was an opportune time to unite the best musicians working today for Band Aid 30.

In order to reflect the current times we live in, the lyrics have been altered slightly but the video is as emotional as the last one.

"It's harrowing, it's not meant for an entertainment show, but we thought you ought to see it," he said of the footage which was aired on the X Factor.

"X Factor nation - we are going to war. This is why we did this song."

The single is officially released today with all proceeds going to help the fight on Ebola.
