Oliver Plunkett Street in Cork has been shortlisted in the Great Street Awards 2016.

It is the only Irish street to make the cut in the awards, which are judged by the Academy of Urbanism in London.

It will now compete against Cairns Street in Liverpool and Deptford High Street in London for the title.

Today the street hosted two judges from the academy, who spent four hours assessing it.

They toured the street, talking to traders and learning about the architecture, heritage and commercial hustle and bustle.

Speaking after the adjudication process, lead assessor Geoff Haslam said: "It's fair to say that we have been overwhelmed by Oliver Plunkett Street today - it offers everything that we are looking for in a great street and more".

Oliver Plunkett Street was laid out across the marshes on the east side of the old medieval city in 1715, and is the longest street in the city centre.

The street was originally named after the newly-crowned King George, and became the centre of Cork's commercial life.

It was renamed Oliver Plunkett Street following the creation of the Irish Free State in the 1920s.

It is the longest street in Cork, and boasts more than 110 independent stores and more than 80 residents.

The winner will be announced at the Urbanism Awards Ceremony in London on November 6th.
