/> The government budget watchdog is calling on the Finance Minister to introduce tougher Budgets over the next 3 years.

In its latest report out today the Fiscal Advisory Council says the €3.5 billion revenue target for the December Budget is exactly what is needed.

The Council is made up of economists and academics responsible for keeping an eye on Budget plans.

But it is urging the Finance Minister to add an extra €1.9 billion in cuts and tax hikes to be achieved by 2015 to boost the economic recovery.

The issue for the government is that it is already finding it difficult to make the planned adjustments under the reform programme and adding more cuts would be politically unpalatable.

The Fiscal Advisory Council also says the overruns in health spending have become a pattern of recent years and the Irish debt sustainability and credit worthiness remain fragile.

This means there is still a risk the country may not be able to cope with current debt levels.

Do you think extending out cuts is better than having them all across one or two Budgets?

If they were going to cut the carers allowance i would ask who is in more need than the sick and disabled? Too many vested interests and sure local elections are on the horizon. If we are unable to take a little break now and again we will die on the street like the over worked workhorse that is whipped just one time to many.
