The acting Taoiseach Enda Kenny says ending civil war politics "is the best thing for our country now".

Mr Kenny has invited the Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin and Independents to government talks.

In a statement, Mr Kenny says: "The new political reality following the election of the 32nd Dáil is difficult for all political parties, including my own, but ending civil war politics is the best thing for our country now".

"It is my hope that those willing to participate or support in a partnership government can come together to discuss and agree how such a government will work".

"I am prepared to host a meeting early next week involving all Independent TDs involved in recent discussions together with the Leader of Fianna Fáil, and I intend to write to all Independent TDs and to the Fianna Fáil leader to that effect".

Speaking to Ocean FM, Mr Kenny says he has examined the prospect of government from every angle.

His responce comes after the Independent Alliance said it was seeking an urgent meeting with Mr Kenny and Mr Martin over government formation.

The Alliance said it was "anxious to resolve the current deadlock".

"In order to initiate a dialogue between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, the Independent Alliance has proposed a meeting with both party leaders in the next 24 hours", the Alliance said in a statement.

It added that both parties should be able to reach agreement on mutual support for at least three budgets.

"The Independent Alliance is eager to play their part in forming a reforming, yet stable government. However, these issues need to be clarified immediately", the statement concluded.

Meanwhile, Mr Martin has accepted an invitation from the Independent Alliance to take part in negotiations to form a minority government.

The Alliance has also issued an invitation to Fine Gael.

Member Shane Ross says he will still take up Mr Kenny's offer to participate in talks for a partnership government.
