The President of the INTO says his union may embark on industrial action if the government introduces pay cuts to the public sector, as the Croke Park 2 deal looks set to be formally rejected today.
The public services committee of the Irish Congress of Trade Unions meets to vote on the deal, after SIPTU's decision to reject the agreement yesterday killed off any prospect of it being accepted by the union umbrella body.
The Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Brendan Howlin is adamant that 300 million euro in savings must still be found.
But Brendan O'Sullivan, President of the Irish National Teacher's Organisation, says the union's members have given them a clear mandate - no more cuts:
The Government must now decide whether or not to legislate for paycuts to make the 300-million euro savings earmarked for this year.
Such a move would be extremely difficult for Labour backbenchers to support.
On top of that unions who have rejected the deal are likely to consider balloting their members for industrial action if there is a threat that their members wages will be cut.
