Consumption of ecstasy in Ireland is the second highest in the world, according to a new Global Drug Survey.

It says 1.98 ecstasy pills are taken per session here, with only Australia higher at 2.10 pills.

The international study also says Ireland 'deserves' its reputation for heavy drinking. The survey examined more than 100,000 people around the world.

It says not only did Ireland have higher rates of drinkers at risk of dependence, but that we also report needing to drink more alcohol than almost any other country to get as drunk as we want to be.

It also found Irish people had the highest rates of getting more drunk more often, attending A&E after drinking, and the highest proportion of drinkers who want to drink less in the coming year.

Some 2.8% of the Irish surveyed sought emergency treatment after drinking within the last 12 months - with Brazil the next highest, at 2.2%.

Seven out of 10 people who sought help were later admitted to hospital, and just under half said it did not change their drinking habits.

"Ireland’s reputation for heavy drinking is well deserved. Not only did Ireland have higher rates of drinkers at risk of dependence, they report needing to drink more alcohol than almost any other country to get as drunk as they would want to be but they also had the highest rates of getting more drunk more often than they wanted to", the report said.

The report advises that "When you get to the place you feel as intoxicated with alcohol as you want to, SLOW your drinking down."

"The tipping point for many people is just one or 2 drinks, so if you want to have a better, cheaper healthier night, just slow down and drink a little less," it added.

While the same report showed Ireland was well behind some other countries when it came to tobacco.

The highest prevalence is in the US, UK, Canada and France. Spain and Brazil reported very low levels.

Less than 10% of Irish people said they smoke - compared to almost 15% in France and Canada, and over 20% in the US.
