Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has called a general election - six weeks after he toppled former leader Julia Gillard.

He's sent an email to supporters saying the vote will be held on the 7th of September.

The announcement follows a turbulent 3 years in power for Rudd's minority Labour government.
