Garda recruitment is to resume next year. A ban on hiring new officers has been in place since 2009 as part of a moratorium in the public sector.

To ensure the numbers in the force do not fall below 1,300 the Justice Minister says there will be an intake of recruits during 2014.

Although the date or numbers have yet to be confirmed.

Alan Shatter made the announcement at the latest Garda reserve graduation at the Garda Training College in Templemore in Co. Tipperary.

He said that while recruitment to the Garda Reserve will continue, he has received sanction from the Minster for Public Expenditure and Reform to begin the process of recruitment to the full-time force.

Mr. Shatter said this is "very important for an organisation like An Garda Síochána, given the demanding nature of policing, to receive a reasonably regular intake of new recruits".

He says they expect to deal with 'a very large' number of applications later this year.

The Garda Commissioner is also welcoming the move. Martin Callinan says he looks forward to seeing new recruits at the Garda Training College in Templemore.
