A cross border search is underway for two men believed to be involved in an ATM robbery and chase - which has left a PSNI constable in serious condition in hospital.

The officer was pinned between a truck and car during the course of the subsequent pursuit in Armagh. The ATM was later found in Monaghan.

A third man has been arrested in connection with the overnight theft in Newry last night.

The constable is said to be in a serious condition in hospital - however his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

The incident is being treated as attempted murder.

Superintendent Simon Walls said, “police were travelling along the Mullaghduff Road, Cullyhanna earlier today when they encountered a suspicious lorry transporting a car.

"As one of the officers exited the police vehicle to speak to the driver, the lorry was driven at speed directly at the officer, striking him and pinning him between the lorry and a police patrol vehicle," he added.

Gardaí have arrested one man following the discovery of the stolen ATM in Monaghan earlier.

It was found stashed in a white transit van in Drumass in Inniskeen this morning.

The cash machine is believed to have been taken from a supermarket in Newry overnight, sparking a widescale search under the code name 'Operation Thor'.

Three men who were in the van were chased by detectives.

One man - aged in his 20s - has since been caught and arrested.

The PSNI joined the hunt for the other two men, who were tracked by helicopter.

A forensic examination has been carried out on the van and its content.

Garda Superintendent Alan Cunningham is leading the investigation on this side of the border:
