There was "no security incident" involving the Garda Commissioner at the force's headquarters last month, the force has insisted.

Their statement comes in the wake of reports about an incident on March 25th.

Garda Commissioner was being driven back to Garda Headquarters in Phoenix Park in Dublin from Northern Ireland.

Drew Harris was in an unmarked PSNI vehicle, which was escorted by the Garda Emergency Response Unit.

In reports over the weekend, it was claimed a garda hit an emergency button to activate a security barrier when they didn't recognise the unmarked jeep.

The barrier is said to have damaged the jeep, but there were no major injuries.

However, in a statement today a Garda spokesperson denied that there was a security incident - instead blaming a malfunctioning bollard.

The spokesperson said: "A newly installed bollard malfunctioned and caught the underside of the vehicle the Commissioner was travelling in.

"This happened at a walking pace. No vehicles were flipped."

The statement adds: "The malfunction was quickly fixed and vehicular traffic went in and out of Garda HQ as normal that day."

It also states that 'normal movement procedures' were followed in relation to Commissioner Harris.
