The family of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe say they are devastated by his senseless and tragic loss.
Around 4,000 people - including 2,500 Gardai - have attended the State funeral for the 41-year-old in Dundalk in Co Louth.
The father of two young children was shot dead during a botched robbery at the Lordship Credit Union last Friday night.
Shortly after 1pm the coffin carrying the remains of Adrian Donohoe arrived at St. Joseph's Redemptorist Church draped in the Tricolor with the Detective Garda's cap and gloves on top.
2,500 Gardai - representing every division in the country - marched in silence behind the cortege alongside the chief mourners - Adrian's wife Caroline, daughter Amy, son Niall, father Hugh and mother Peggy.
At the end of the mass President Michael D. Higgins expressed condolences on behalf of the people of Ireland to Adrian Donohoe's family.
He will be laid to rest in Lordship Cemetery just a short distance away from where he was murdered on Friday night.
Speaking during the service, Chief Celebrant Fr. Michael Cusack made an impassioned appeal for information about the murder.
