In summer 1913, members of the Gaelic League attended their Ard Fheis or national convention in Galway. The assembled group gathered outside the city's Town Hall Theatre for a photograph. Among those in attendance were Eamon de Valera, Douglas Hyde and Seán T. O’Kelly, as well as 1916 signatories such as Seán Mac Diarmada and Pádraig Pearse.

Members of the Curran family were members of the Gaelic League, with several present for the photograph of well over 150 people. After procuring a copy of the photo, it was passed between generations before being stored in the family attic for over 50 years. It was recently rediscovered, and family members have since been able to establish that it represents a valuable historical document, featuring many of Irish history's key players in a rare group photo.

A representative of the Curran family explains on the Town Hall Theatre website that "we are giving it to the Town Hall Theatre because we think it is only right that it should return to the place where it was taken to be enjoyed by the people of Galway and the public at large. We are delighted with the reception we received from the Town Hall Theatre when we approached them in September with the image.

"They quickly assembled a team of volunteers here in Galway to work with us on identifying most of those present in the photograph. We are delighted with the result and we now look forward to perhaps the public assisting us identify the few remaining names," the family member concludes. Experts from NUIG and local book shops are among those who have helped identify a bulk of the people in the picture.

The photograph, which also features the likes of Constance Markievicz, will now go on permanent display at the Town Hall Theatre.
