The front-running candidate in Brazil’s upcoming presidential election is recovering in hospital after being stabbed on the campaign trail.

Far-right candidate Jair Bolsonaro was attending a campaign event in Minas Gerais State when he was attacked.

Video aired by Brazil’s Globo news shows Mr Bolsonaro being carried by supporters through a crowd of people – before suddenly collapsing backwards after a crowd member appears to lunge towards him and stab him in the abdomen area.

It was not immediately clear how serious his injuries were.

In a message on Twitter, his son Flavio Bolsonaro said he had suffered a superficial wound in the abdomen and was recovering well in hospital.

The latest poll in the election puts Mr Bolsonaro at the head of the pack with 22% of the vote.

The Ibote poll put environmentalist candidate Marina Silva and leftist Ciro Gomes in joint second place - with 12% each.

The country’s former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva had been the frontrunner, before an electoral court ruled that it was illegal for him to run – as he is currently in prison on corruption charges.
