Four Irish citizens are amongst hundreds of people who've been cleared from a besieged Cairo mosque.

Egypt's security forces used tear gas and live bullets to empty the building earlier today.

The Irish-Egyptian family includes three women and a teenage boy who are the children of Hussein Halawa - the Imam of Ireland's biggest mosque in Dublin.

The four were said to have taken shelter in the Al-Fath Mosque in central Cairo yesterday when security forces opened fire at protesters.

It’s understood that two of the family have been detained since leaving mosque, while the whereabouts of the other two siblings is still unknown.

The DFA says they are in ongoing contact with the Egyptian authorities over their safety and well-being.

Nasaybi Halawa is a relative of one of those held says it was a frightening experience for them.
