Four people have been arrested at Manchester Airport on suspicion of terrorism after being deported from Turkey.

The arrests are part of an investigation into nine family members, including four children, who were detained by the Turkish authorities for allegedly trying to illegally enter Syria.

One of that group, Waheed Ahmed, was detained in Birmingham on Tuesday following his deportation from Turkey.

Mr Ahmed, 21, is the son of Rochdale councillor Shakil Ahmed.

Those arrested at Manchester Airport all live in Rochdale and are aged between 22 and 47.

Officers are trying to establish their reason for travel and apparent attempted entry into Syria.

Another man, aged 31, was detained in Rochdale on Tuesday.

All the arrests have been made under the Terrorism Act.

The nine family members, including two women aged 47 and 22, three men aged 24, 22 and 21, and four children aged one, three, eight and 11, were stopped close to the Syrian border on 1 April.

The four children are currently wards of court.

After the group was detained in Turkey, Greater Manchester Police said they had uncovered "no evidence whatsoever" of any imminent threat to Rochdale or the UK.
